Introduction to Chakra Healing with Basic Chakra Balancing and Healing Exercise
Flowing within our bodies is the energy that drives and maintains our life functions. This energy flows not only within our bodies, but also through the very fabric of the universe. In Asian traditions, people call this energy ki, chi, or prana. It is the basic life force that permeates all things. Many ancient cultures believe that there are seven major points of intersection for the flow of this energy in the human body, located along the spine at key branches of the human nervous system. These points ascend upward from the tail bone to the top of the skull. They are called chakras.
Chakra is a Sanskrit word meaning wheel or circle. This name is appropriate because energy tends to swirl in a circular motion as it gathers in the chakras, like a vortex. Chakras are often described as “wheels of light.” They are often depicted as lotus flowers with a different number of petals for each one. Various traditions also associate a specific color with each chakra. According to many cultures, balancing this energy flow (i.e. chakra balancing) is integral to one’s overall physical, emotional, and mental health.
Although chakras cannot be seen or revealed in autopsies, their existence is well documented in the ancient healing and spiritual disciplines of the Far East. In traditional Indian medicine, each chakra in the spinal column is believed to influence or govern the bodily functions near its region of the spine. Each chakra is also associated with a specific kind of energy related to various human attributes, from the most primal to the most spiritual. The lower chakras govern the more primal, physical aspects of human existence, while the upper chakras are associated with one’s spiritual growth and evolution of consciousness.
Chakra balancing refers to a number of different techniques used to clear or release stagnant or excessive energy in the individual chakras, so that the body’s entire energy system flows smoothly. These techniques can also be used to increase energy in a chakra when it is depleted, thereby strengthening its ability to function properly. When your chakras are balanced, your energy (life force) circulates freely throughout the body’s entire meridian system (or energy pathways). When all seven chakras are functioning well and in balance, we are healthy in body, mind, and spirit.
The concept of chakra balancing or chakra healing is central to many body-mind-spirit healing therapies. The subtle energy of the chakras is explored through various practices such as aromatherapy, mantras, meditation, Reiki, hands-on healing, flower essences, sound therapy, color/light therapy, and crystal/gem therapy, to name a few. Many popular Asian healing modalities such as acupuncture, acupressure, shiatsu, tai chi, and qigong focus on balancing the flow through the energetic meridians that are an integral part of the chakra system.
In the ancient Korean body-mind-spirit discipline of Shin-sun-do (Way of the Divine), there is a system for achieving spiritual completion through the chakras. The goal is to become consciously aware of one’s soul and act to nurture its growth. Chakra balancing and chakra healing training, developed by author Ilchi Lee, is a modernized version of this ancient system adapted for modern times. The chart below offers a brief summary of the individual chakras and their primary characteristics.
Description of the Chakras
There are seven different chakras that represent different areas of the body and can dysfunction in various ways. Feelings, thoughts, traumas, illnesses, medical conditions, and emotional disturbances can lodge in the chakras and impede healthy energy flow.
1 Root chakra:
Location – base of spine in tailbone area.
Warning signals include fatigue, disagreements with family members, disorientation due to lack of grounding.
Emotional issues – survival issues such as financial independence, money, and food.
2 Sacral chakra:
Location – lower abdomen, about two inches below the navel and two inches in.
Warning signals include sexual dysfunction, hormonal imbalance, lack of creativity.
Emotional issues – sense of abundance, well-being, pleasure, and sexuality.
3 Solar plexus chakra:
Location – upper abdomen in the stomach area.
Warning signals include digestive system upset, weakness in “core” muscles, low immunity, low self-esteem.
Emotional issues – self-worth, self-confidence, and self-esteem.
4 Heart chakra:
Location – center of the chest just above the heart.
Warning signals include high or low blood pressure, cardiac symptoms, anger, numbness, fear of love.
Emotional issues – love, joy, and inner peace.
5 Throat chakra:
Location – throat.
Warning signals include hyper- or hypothyroid (over- or under-active thyroid gland), frustration, fear or inability to express oneself.
Emotional issues – Communication, self-expression of feelings, the truth.
6 Brow (third eye) chakra:
Location – forehead between the eyes.
Warning signals include headaches, lack of insight, feeling lost, lack of psychic intuitiveness.
Emotional issues – Intuition, imagination, wisdom, ability to think and make decisions.
7 Crown chakra:
Location – the very top of the head.
Warning signals include headaches, spaciness/brain fog, fear, disconnection, lack of trust/hope/faith.
Emotional issues – Inner and outer beauty, our connection to spirituality, pure bliss.
Note that the sequence of chakras start from the lower body upwards and denote a transcendence from the physical to the spiritual as the positive energy flows in and upwards and the negative energy in the opposite direction, downwards and out.
An example of a short and simple chakra balancing and healing exercise is given in the next section. Not that each chakra is opened and activated in turn before all are connected as a conduit to take in new positive energy and remove old blocked energy.
Basic Chakra Balancing and Healing Exercise
There are many chakra balancing and healing exercises and for the sake of demonstration a relatively brief example is given. As such, chakra meditation transforms your life by clearing out and enlivening your vital energy centers. It is by many considered to be the most direct ways to heal and balance oneself on physical, emotional, and mental levels. In longer meditations, it is possible to focus only on each chakra at a time, but on a beginning level the following brief exercise is effective to open the main chakras to new energy. The exercise follows hereafter.
Welcome to this chakra meditation.
We will focus on healing the seven main chakras or energies that affect the body.
We will work on each chakra in turn, and repair any energy blocks or negative emotions, which will be replaced with positive thoughts and feelings.
Find a comfortable position to sit, or lie down, and close your eyes.
Begin to breathe…very slowly and deeply.
With each outward breath you are releasing any tensions that you may have.
Start by becoming aware of the planet earth below you.
Imagine that there really is a connection between yourself and the earth.
Visualize the beam of light which starts at the top of your head and goes downwards, through you whole body. And imagine the beam of light come out of the soles of your feet.
See the beam of light spreading out like the roots of a tree, and visualize these roots as they go deeper…and deeper into the earth.
Feel yourself going deeper and deeper into relaxation and throughout the whole healing session you will continue to feel safe and secure as you know that you are grounded to the earth.
Now, start to become aware of the first energy that enter at the base chakra, located at the base of your spine.
This is related to the color red, and you can also hear this in the first note of the musical scale, C. It is also related to your sense of smell and your survival instinct.
Now I want you to visualize this area at the base of your spine as being a rotating sphere of energy…pulsating positive healing energy from the universe into your body, and releasing any blocked energy or negative emotions.
Now start to become aware of a second energy center located just below your navel, known as the sacral chakra.
This is related to the color orange, and the second note in the musical scale, D.
It is also related to your sense of taste.
Visualize this center as a rotating energy sphere, pulling in positive healing energy from the universe into your body, and releasing old, blocked energies and negative emotions that may be there.
Continue to visualize the color orange and feel yourself becoming connected with feelings of creativity, harmonious relationships, and balanced sexual energy.
And now, become aware of another energy area. This is your third, or solar plexus chakra located just above your navel, but below your chest.
This is related to the color yellow, and the third note of the musical scale, E.
It is also related to your sense of sight.
Visualize this as a rotating sphere of yellow energy, pulling positive energy from the universe into your body, and releasing old, blocked energies and negative emotions that may be there, and replacing it with only positive energy.
Continue to visualize the color yellow, and as you do this, focus on feelings of personal power, enhanced energy, and self-control.
Now, start to become aware of the fourth energy center known as the heart chakra located in the center of your chest.
This is related to the color green, and the fourth note of the musical scale, which is F.
It is also related to your sense of touch and feelings of compassion and love.
Visualize this as a rotating green sphere of energy, pulling positive energy from the universe deep into your body, releasing old, blocked energies and negative emotions that may be there.
Continue to visualize the color green, and as you do this, focus on feelings of love and compassion towards all things.
Now, start to become aware of the fifth energy center, known as the throat chakra, located in the center of your throat.
This throat chakra is related to the color blue, and resonates to the fifth note of the musical scale, which is G.
It is also related to sound, speech, and communication.
Visualize this as a rotating blue sphere of energy, pulling positive energy from the universe into your body, and releasing old, blocked energies and negative emotions that may be there, and replacing it with only positive energy.
Continue to visualize the color blue, and as you do this, focus on feelings of self-expression and communication.
Now, start to become aware of the sixth energy center, known as the third eye, located in the center of your forehead, just above your eyes.
This is related to the color indigo, and resonates to the sixth note of the musical scale, which is A.
It is also related to light and vision.
Visualize this as a rotating indigo sphere, pulling positive energy from the universe into your body, releasing old, blocked energies and negative emotions that may be there.
Continue to visualize the color indigo, and as you do this, focus on feelings of intuition and insight, and being able to see everything clearly.
Now, start to become aware of the seventh and final energy center, often referred to as your crown chakra, located at the very top of your head.
This is related to the color violet, and resonates to the seventh note of the musical scale, which is B.
It is also related to thought, knowledge, and intuition.
Visualize this as a rotating violet sphere of energy, pulling positive energy from the universe into your body, replacing old, blocked and negative energy.
As you visualize this color violet, start to feel yourself connecting with your higher self, and feelings of wisdom.
Now, visualize a line running through all seven chakras, connecting them all together, and bringing you a great feeling of balance and well-being.
And as you bring all the colors together, feel yourself being surrounded by an amazing technicolor rainbow of glorious, healing light.
You have created a healing energy within your whole body, which will continue to heal your body, long after this session has ended.
Now, visualize your chakras closing one at a time, from your base chakra, to your crown chakra; and every chakra is now fully energized, healed, and balanced.
You will continue to feel energized and totally uplifted for a long time.
You will feel much more confident in all aspects of your life.
You will feel more creative, and will accept and love yourself as you are.
You find yourself being more and more compassionate towards others and nothing towards yourself.
The love you give out is multiplied, and returns to you ten-fold.
You have developed an incredible energy, and you have succeeded in raising your vibration to a higher level.
